U-M has collective agreements with various labor organizations representing selected employees who perform specific roles at sites in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint, and Michigan Medicine. These employees perform tasks that are essential to the university`s tasks in teaching, research, and patient care. These include nurses, police officers, graduate instructors, artisans and more. The collective bargaining unit`s additional salary and salary increase plans are available in the HRRIS data management calendar in Google Calendar. Approximately 2,600 university employees on campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint, as well as Michigan Medicine, are members of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 1583. They play an important role in supporting the University`s education, research and patient care missions through a variety of work, primarily in the areas of service, maintenance and patient care. Some members also work in direct patient care roles as psychiatric nurses and practical nurses.

The Leadership Collaboration Group has developed a guide for supervisors of employees covered by the AFSCME collective agreement. The document was created to support supervisors and promote consistent practices across the university. For more information about the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) and the Lecturer Employee Organization (LEO), see Academic Human Resources. AFSCME Local 1583 is a union that represents workers at the University of Michigan, including the three sites and the health care system. The document is accessible to AFSCME supervisors and requires a login with your U-M account. The university also employs autopsy attendants and medical investigators at the Wayne County Medical Examiner`s Office and the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner`s Office. Employees represented by AFSCME receive generous benefits, including low-cost prescription drugs and co-payments for medical care, pension plans with a 2:1 employer contribution, paid leave, and seniority and job security entitlements. .
